This degree requires 120 semester hours, including 42 hours of University Core coursework.
Degree Requirements
All candidates for the Bachelor of Science must meet the following:
- Fulfill all university requirements for a bachelor’s degree, as outlined in the Bachelor’s Degree Requirements section of this catalog.
- Complete Core Curriculum Requirements (for students entering college in Fall 1999 or later).
- Note: Students transferring from a Texas public community college or university with core complete certification will have satisfied A&M-Victoria’s core requirements.
- Meet Bachelor of Science degree requirements, which include:
- Lower Division:
- 3 semester hours of speech.
- Computer Literacy/Proficiency (see note below).
- Natural Sciences:
- 11 semester hours in natural sciences, including at least 2 semester hours of laboratory courses.
- To fulfill the natural science course requirement, students must complete at least 6 semester hours in natural science coursework.
- Acceptable disciplines: Biology, Biophysical Sciences, Chemistry, Geology, and Physics.
- Complete all required courses for the degree plan (outlined below).
Note: The computer literacy/proficiency requirement may be satisfied within the core curriculum. However, students-regardless of core completion status-must still complete 3 semester hours each in speech and computer literacy/proficiency.

Major Program Requirements

Lower Division Requirements - 31 Semester Hours
Upper Division Requirements - 26 Semester Hours
BIOL Upper Division Lab Requirement - 4 Semester Hours
- Students must complete a minimum of four hours of UD BIOL 31XX or 41XX Labs. Concurrent enrollment in the lecture is required. Deviation requires advisement.
Free Electives
Students must complete additional lower- or upper-division electives as needed to meet the 120 semester hour degree requirement, including at least 36 upper-division semester hours. Total: 120 Semester Hours
^ May be satisfied within core curriculum. However, 3 semester hours of both speech and computer literacy/proficiency are still required even if the student is certified as core complete by way of transfer from a Texas public community college or public university. Natural Science Lab requirements will be met within core curriculum or lower division major requirements. *Labs are required to correspond with lectures. Premedical and Predental Program
The Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and courses taught at Texas A&M University-Victoria fulfill the admissions requirements for most medical and dental schools in the United States and its protectorates. Premedical and predental students are advised that many medical and dental schools require the following courses (taken from TMDSAS); however, students are responsible for determining the specific requirements of those medical or dental schools selected for application. - Biological Sciences (14 sch; 12 sch lecture and 2 sch lab)
- General Chemistry One year with laboratory (8 sch)
- Organic Chemistry One year with laboratory (8 sch)
- Biochemistry (3 sch)
- General Physics One year with laboratory (8 sch)
- English (6 sch)
- Upper division statistics (3 sch)
Furthermore, students need to take the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) or the Dental School Admissions Test (DAT) to fulfill admission requirements of most medical and dental schools. These tests are usually taken in the spring of the junior year of college. For more information seek the advisement of the Pre-Health Advisory Committee (PHAC). Letters of recommendation from the PHAC will be provided only for students who have fulfilled PHAD requirements.
