Double Majors
Students may earn and receive credit for more than one major (plan). This is referred to as a “double major”, consisting of a first major and an additional major or, in rare instances, more than one additional major. The following conditions apply:
- Both majors must lead to the same baccalaureate degree (e.g., both must be part of a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science). If the majors lead to different degree types (e.g., one B.A. and one B.S.), the requirements for a second bachelor’s degree apply.
- Each major must be listed on A&M-Victoria’s Inventory of Approved Degree Programs with the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
- Non-disciplinary majors, such as Applied Arts and University Studies, are not permitted to be a part of multi-major degree programs.
- Both majors (plans) will appear on the student’s transcript and diploma upon graduation with a double major.
- The major requirement hours completed for each additional major must be unique to each major, and completed at the A&M-Victoria.
- Students must earn a minimum 2.00 GPA in each major for all coursework attempted at A&M-Victoria.
- Students may discontinue pursuit of a double major at any time before graduation by submitting a Change of Plan (Major) form. The student will then continue with a single major.
- Only one degree is awarded for a double major.
- Students who complete all degree requirements for one major but not the second may graduate with the completed major. Provided they remain continuously enrolled at A&M-Victoria (excluding summer terms), they may complete the second major without being subject to the additional 30 semester credit hours required for a second degree. This provision applies only to undergraduate double majors.
Post-Graduation Completion of Second Major
In the case where a student completes all degree requirements for just one major, the transcript and diploma will reflect only one major.
Once the second major is completed, the student must notify their academic advisor. Upon confirmation of completion by the Student Records Office, the second major will be added to the student’s transcript with the appropriate term of completion. To receive an updated diploma reflecting both majors, the student must return the original diploma to the Registrar’s Office.
Dual Degrees
Students who have earned a bachelor’s degree from the A&M-Victoria or another accredited institution may pursue an additional bachelor’s degree at A&M-Victoria. Students seeking a dual degree will receive two separate diplomas upon completion of all degree requirements (e.g., two B.A. degrees, two B.S. degrees, a combination of either B.A, B.S., B.B.A., etc.). Students may not pursue more than two degree programs concurrently.
To earn a second/dual bachelor’s degree, students must meet all university, college, and department/curricular requirements not already satisfied by the first degree. The following conditions apply:
- Courses used to meet core curriculum, general education, and other common lower-division requirements may be applied to both degree programs.
- Both degrees/majors must be on A&M-Victoria’s Inventory of Approved Degree Programs with the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
- For each additional bachelor’s degree, students must complete at least 30 unique semester semester hours beyond those applied to any previously awarded degrees. These hours must be completed at the A&M-Victoria.
- For dual degrees conferred simultaneously, students must complete a minimum of 30 additional semester credit hours beyond the requirements of a single degree. Graduation will occur only after all requirements for both degrees are fulfilled.
- Students completing dual bachelor’s degrees receive two diplomas.
