MS-CIS Admission Requirements

Graduate Admission
Admission to graduate studies requires meeting the university’s graduate admissions requirements (see Graduate Admissions )

Program Admission
To be admitted to the M.S. in Computer Information Systems (MS-CIS) program, you must meet the university’s graduate admission requirements and submit the following:

  • Resume: A summary of your work experience and educational background.
  • Essay: A one-page statement explaining why you’re applying to the program, your career goals, and any research or scholarly interests.
  • Test Scores: Submit official GRE or GMAT scores and have an Admissions Index of 980 or higher. The Admissions Index is calculated as follows:
    • GRE taken after August 1, 2011: GPA for the last 60 semester credit hours x 200 + (Verbal + Quantitative score - 260)
    • GMAT: GPA for the last 60 semester credit hours x 200 + (GMAT score x 2)
  • Coursework Requirements: Evidence of completed coursework in the following areas:
    • 3 semester hours in Calculus, Discrete Structures, Discrete Mathematics, or Operations Research
    • 3 semester hours in Statistics
    • 3 semester hours in Information Systems in Organizations
    • 3 semester hours in Principles of Management
    • 6 semester hours in programming or data structures.
  • Prior Learning Documentation: If you’ve gained relevant knowledge through non-academic coursework, certifications, or work experience, you may submit a portfolio for evaluation to potentially exempt from certain prerequisite courses. Exemptions are at the discretion of the CIS Graduate Program Advisor.

Program Admission for Three-Year Bachelor Bridge Program

Graduates of three-year Bachelor’s degree programs who meet the international admission requirements for the MS in Computer Information Systems (MS-CIS) and have the equivalent of at least 90 international undergraduate semester credit hours will be admitted as graduate students. However, they must complete the Bridge program to reach the 120 credit hours required for a Texas A&M University-Victoria bachelor’s degree.

  • Important Notes:
    • Lower division coursework from U.S. institutions cannot be used to meet the 90 credit hour requirement or to fulfill certain Bridge program requirements.
    • Lower division courses may only be used to meet prerequisite or leveling requirements.
    • The Bridge program, specifically Sections 1 and 3, must be completed before the student can enroll in more than 18 graduate credit hours, excluding prerequisite and leveling courses.

Each student must fulfill the requirements in Sections 1 and 2, either through transfer credit or Texas A&M University-Victoria coursework. Lower division credits will not count toward upper division requirements. If any coursework from the 90 international semester hours fulfills a requirement, it will be waived but no credit will be given for that course.

  • Academic Standards: Students must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher throughout the Bridge program. If a grade lower than a “C” is earned, the course must be repeated. No more than two “C” grades can be applied toward the Bridge program. Repeated courses will show both grades on the transcript, but only the most recent grade will count toward the GPA. If a student’s GPA falls below 3.0, they will be placed on academic probation, with specific conditions for removal communicated by the Dean of the College of Natural & Applied Science.

Bridge Program Requirements:

  • Section 1 (7 semester hours):

    • ENGL 3430 Professional Writing
    • COMM 3325 Professional Speaking
  • Section 2 (21 semester hours):
These requirements may be waived, but no credit will be given if waived:

    • 3 semester hours of Calculus, Discrete Structures, Discrete Mathematics, Operations Research, or Management Science
    • 3 semester hours of Statistics
    • 3 semester hours of Information Systems in Organizations
    • 3 semester hours of Principles of Management
    • 6 semester hours of Programming or Data Structures
  • Section 3 (Upper Division Courses):
Any additional courses needed to reach the required 120 credit hours, chosen from upper division COSC or MATH courses, taken under advisement.
