(Pertains to Undergraduate Students Only)

Undergraduate students who complete their degree requirements with exceptionally high scholastic achievement may be awarded baccalaureate degrees with honors, subject to the approval of the appropriate dean and the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.

To be eligible for graduation with honors, students must:

  • Complete at least 30 semester credit hours at Texas A&M University-Victoria, and

  • Achieve a final grade point average (GPA) based on the following scale:

GPA Range Honor Designation
3.50 - 3.67 Cum Laude
3.68 - 3.84 Magna Cum Laude
3.85 - 4.00 Summa Cum Laude

Ceremonial Honors (Commencement Recognition Only)

Honors candidates are identified for commencement based on a preliminary GPA calculated through the second-to-last semester of coursework.

  • Students with 30 or more semester hours at Texas A&M University-Victoria (A&M-Victoria):
The GPA is based solely on coursework completed at A&M-Victoria.

  • Students with fewer than 30 semester hours at Texas A&M University-Victoria (A&M-Victoria):
The GPA is based on the last 45 semester hours of coursework, including A&M-Victoria and any transfer courses (lower- or upper-division), provided the student’s A&M-Victoria GPA is at least 3.50.

Note: The “last 45 semester hours” may include more than 45 hours, as all coursework taken during a term used to reach the 45-hour threshold is included in the calculation. If a student completed coursework at more than one institution in a term used to reach the 45 hours, all hours from that term and all institutions are included.

Official Honors (Posted on Transcript and Diploma)

Official honors are calculated after final grades have been posted for the graduation term.

  • Students with 45 or more semester hours at Texas A&M University-Victoria (A&M-Victoria):
The GPA for honors is based only on coursework completed at A&M-Victoria . All courses attempted at A&M-Victoria are included in the GPA calculation, including repeated courses and those not used to fulfill degree requirements.

  • Students with fewer than 45 semester hours at Texas A&M University-Victoria (A&M-Victoria):
The GPA is based on the last 45 semester hours of coursework (including A&M-Victoria and transfer credit), provided the student has completed at least 30 semester hours at A&M-Victoria and earned a minimum 3.50 GPA for A&M-Victoria coursework. All attempted college-level courses are included in the calculation, including repeated courses and those not applied to degree requirements.

Note: As with ceremonial honors, the “last 45 semester hours” may include more than 45 hours, as all coursework taken during a term used to reach the 45-hour threshold is included in the calculation. All coursework from any institution during terms used to meet the 45-hour requirement is included.

Honors for Post-Baccalaureate Degrees

Post-baccalaureate students earning a second baccalaureate degree may graduate with honors under the same criteria used for students earning their first baccalaureate degree.
