Admission to a Graduate Certification Program
- Applicant must possess a Master’s degree from a regionally accredited university, preferably one in educational leadership or curriculum & assessment.
- For applicants with a GPA less than 2.50/4.00, the GRE will be required prior to admission.
- Three letters of recommendation (one from current supervisor), applicant essay, and official transcripts from master and bachelor degrees are required.
Degree Requirements
Texas Education Agency requirements to obtain a Principal certificate.
- Must hold a master’s degree from a university that is accredited by an accrediting agency recognized by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
- Must hold a valid classroom teaching certificate.
- Must have two years of creditable teaching experience as a classroom teacher.
- Must successfully complete an approved principal educator preparation program.
- Must successfully complete the TExES #268 and TExES #368/PASL certification assessments.

Additional UHV requirements to obtain a Principal certificate:
- Admission to graduate study within the College of Education & Health Professions must precede the completion of applicable course work.
- Participants must complete the certification preparation program and present evidence of successful passing of TExES #268 practice test prior to being allowed to take the TExES #268 and TExES #368/PASL certification examinations.
- Participants must complete required administrative internship and practicum experiences.
