Superintendent Graduate Certification Preparation Program

Admission to a Graduate Certification Program


  • Applicant must possess a Master’s degree from a regionally accredited university, preferably one in educational leadership or curriculum & assessment
  • For applicants with a GPA less than 2.50/4.00, the GRE will be required prior to admission.
  • Three letters of recommendation (one from current supervisor), applicant essay, and official transcripts from master and bachelor degrees are required.

TEA Certification Requirements


The Texas Education Agency requires the following of candidates for Superintendent Certification:

  • Must hold a master’s degree from a university that is accredited by an accrediting agency recognized by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
  • Must hold a Principal certificate or the equivalent issued by the TEA, another state or country or, must have completed the superintendent certificate application and been approved by the TEA to substitute managerial experience in lieu of a principal certificate.
  • Must successfully complete an approved superintendent educator preparation program.
  • Must successfully complete the required exam TExES #195).

Additional UHV requirements to obtain a Superintendent certificate:

  • Admission to graduate study within the College of Education & Health Professions must precede the starting of any course work.
  • Participants must complete the certification preparation program prior to being allowed to take the TExES #195 certification examination.
  • Participants must complete an approved administrative practicum experience.
