Graduate Certifications
UH-Victoria offers programs leading to the following graduate certificates. Specific requirements for each certificate are available from the Educator Preparation Office. The State Board of Educator Certification requires passing scores on the appropriate TExES (Texas Examination of Educator Standards) or TexMaT (Texas Examinations for Master Teachers) for certificates.
NOTE: When students begin work toward certification, a personal profile is recorded at the State Board of Educator Certification (SBEC). Students are responsible for maintaining current information online at this agency’s website (www.tea.state.tx.us).
Admission to a Graduate Certification Program
For applicants, with GPA’s below 3.0, seeking certifications in a class other than classroom teacher the following scores must be achieved:
GRE® scores in the following ranges:
- GRE® Verbal Reasoning - 143 or greater
- GRE® Quantitative Reasoning - 140 or greater
- GRE® Analytical Writing - 3.0 or greater
The applicant MUST also meet the UHV admissions index.
* Revised (12/27/16) General Test Score Bands for GRE® to be used for Admission to an Educator Preparation Program under the 10% Exception Rule in 19 TAC §227.10(a)(3)(D)
Degree Requirements
Texas Education Agency requirements to obtain a Principal certificate.
- Must hold a master’s degree from a university that is accredited by an accrediting agency recognized by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
- Hold a valid classroom teaching certificate.
- Have two years of creditable teaching experience as a classroom teacher.
- Successfully complete an approved principal educator preparation program.
- Successfully complete the required exam.

Additional UHV requirements to obtain a Principal certificate:
- Admission to graduate study within the School of Education, Health Professions & Human Development must precede the completion of applicable course work.
- Completion of an approved administrative internship experience.
- Completion of required course work designed to develop administrative competencies and comply with SBEC Learner Centered Proficiencies for the Principalship.
- Eligible to take all TEA licensure examinations after successfully completing twenty-four hours of ELAS coursework.
