Secondary Education Teacher Certification Programs


Programs leading to the certification of teachers for grades 7-12 are offered in cooperation among the College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences, College of Business, College of Education & Health Professions and College of Natural & Applied Science. Candidates earn their academic degrees through the Colleges of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences and Business to obtain teacher certification through the College of Education & Health Professions.

The following are requirements for degrees that incorporate the provision of teacher certification:

  1. Satisfy the requirements for the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science or Bachelor in Business Administration.
    1. For the Bachelor of Arts option, candidates can indicate a choice of plan as Humanities with either English or History, or students may indicate a choice of plan as Mathematical Science with Math and students may indicate a choice of plan as Spanish.
    2. For the Bachelor of Science option, candidates indicate a choice of plan as either computer science or mathematics or Biology (Science certification).
    3. The Bachelor in Business Administration applies to those electing to choose a plan in management and obtain a business education certificate, grades 6-12.
    4. All teacher certification candidates must have 9 semester hours of English, 6 of which must be in composition.
    5. Advising for content related courses is provided by College of Business or College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences.
  2. Complete courses in fundamentals of speech and computer proficiency (not more than 5 years old), and complete a minimum of six hours of laboratory natural science courses for the B.B.A. or eight hours of laboratory natural science courses for the B.A. or B.S. degrees.
  3. Secure admission to teacher education through the College of Education & Health Professions.
  4. Complete 24 hours of Professional of Development/Education courses:
  1. Satisfy requirements in one of the teaching fields, consistent with the courses meeting new state standards.
  2. Grade of C or better is required in courses pertaining to the Content Area and Teacher Education Program.
  3. Candidates must take and pass the state content TExES exam and EC-12 PPR TExES #160 before student teaching.

Students approved to Teacher Education program Fall 2019 will take content test first and EdTPA with Student Teaching.

Secondary Education

The candidate must to be certified under standards mandated by the State Texas Education Agency as follows:

1.  Completion of the courses which fulfill the standards in one of the following teaching fields: Business; Computer Science; English, Language Arts, Reading; History; Mathematics; Science; Spanish; Speech.

2.  Completion of all degree requirements for an academic degree incorporating one of the areas above.

3.  Completion of professional development courses as follows:
     CUIN 3323 Instructional Design  
     CUIN 3327 Educational Technology  

4.  Pass TExES in Professional Development and appropriate secondary field TExES.

5.  Apply for teaching certificate when all course work has been completed.

6.  Students already holding a bachelor’s degree should request a certification plan.

7.  Meet all TExES Academic Program requirements.

Student Teaching and Professional Seminar

Secondary Education Program


*C or better in courses pertaining to your Content Area and Teacher Education Program*

TSI complete/exempt, GPA of 2.50 overall and 2.50 English, lower division core courses complete, background check results and admission to the Teacher Education Program REQUIRED BEFORE taking block courses

Block Courses


Prerequisite(s): Admission to Teacher Education

Classes have field based requirements and must be taken concurrently and must be taken before moving on to the rest of the Education classes.

Students should take and pass PPR upon completion of Block I courses.

Student Teaching


Candidates must take and pass the state content exam and PPR EC - 12 TExES # 160 before student teaching (or EdTPA if started program Fall 2019).
