Master Reading Teacher (MRT) Graduate Certification

  • Hold a valid Texas teacher certificate.
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • A minimum of three years of teaching experience in an accredited school.
  • Admission to graduate study within the School of Education, Health Professions & Human Development must precede the completion of applicable course work.
  • Pass the TExMaT #85 for Master Reading Teacher, unless you hold a Reading Specialist certificate.

Graduate Certifications


UH-Victoria offers programs leading to the following graduate certificates. Specific requirements for each certificate are available from the Educator Preparation Office. The State Board of Educator Certification requires passing scores on the appropriate TExES (Texas Examination of Educator Standards) or TexMaT (Texas Examinations for Master Teachers) for certificates.

NOTE: When students begin work toward certification, a personal profile is recorded at the State Board of Educator Certification (SBEC). Students are responsible for maintaining current information online at this agency’s website (www.tea.state.tx.us).

Admission to a Graduate Certification Program

For applicants, with GPA’s below 2.5, seeking certifications in a class other than classroom teacher the following scores must be achieved:

GRE® scores in the following ranges:

  • GRE® Verbal Reasoning - 143 or greater
  • GRE® Quantitative Reasoning - 140 or greater
  • GRE® Analytical Writing - 3.0 or greater

The applicant MUST also meet the UHV admissions index.

* Revised (12/27/16) General Test Score Bands for GRE® to be used for Admission to an Educator Preparation Program under the 10% Exception Rule in 19 TAC §227.10(a)(3)(D)

Degree Requirements

Complete the 15 semester hours


Complete the 15 semester hours of specified graduate-level courses beyond the bachelor’s degree in an approved graduate teacher education program. Students must have a signed plan on file.
